WHY THE DAWNING OF A MIRACLE SCHOLARSHIP?

Statement of Purpose

Many of today’s students have to deal with various serious health conditions. These children and youth face countless hardships. Recent studies have shown that 10 to 15 percent of American children today are stricken with chronic illnesses, including asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes. Many students also suffer from other devastating illnesses that are disabling or worse, life-threatening, such as: cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, Down Syndrome, and many other serious health problems.

These health conditions often prevent the sick child from doing well in school. When one has to deal with the stresses of combating the effects of a debilitating sickness like epilepsy everyday of his or her life, it is difficult for that person to even think of how to pay for a semester’s tuition, let alone actually raise the money for it. In a country where more than one in three full-time students work to pay for the cost of higher education, being in poor health can make going to college seem like an impossible dream or a miracle.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Dawning of a Miracle Scholarship is made possible through a percentage of sales from Dawn’s Daughter: Everything a Woman Needs to Know and from donations from many thoughtful individuals and organizations that recognize the value of education and the impact of severe illnesses on a student’s life.

Mission Statement

The Dawning of a Miracle Scholarship is dedicated to helping students with chronic or life-threatening illnesses continue their education.  Our goal is to help insure that these deserving students will not be deprived of higher education because of a shortage of funds.

Financial Difficulties of Families with Children with Chronic of Life-threatening Illnesses

Financing a child’s education can be a challenge to many students and parents.  When parents incur additional expenses associated with a child’s chronic or life-threatening illnesses, the costs can be staggering.  As a result, these families can sometimes never afford a college education for their children.

Many families of children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses experience financial difficulties.  Even if these families have full medical insurance coverage, they can spend a large portion of their income on co-payments, medical equipment and treatment that their insurance does not provide, travel to and from doctors’ offices and hospitals, motels, and meals. Single parent families or families dependent upon two incomes are likely to experience financial difficulties, if a parent must quit his or her job to care for a sick child.

Eligibility Requirements

This scholarship will be a one-time $1,000 scholarship awarded to a college-bound high school female graduating senior who has a chronic or life-threatening illness.

How to Apply

Applications are available through the counselors’ offices at all public and private high schools in Savannah-Chatham County from January through March of each year.  Scholarships are awarded annually in May.
